Top 3 Leading Smartphone Manufacturers

There are a lot of smartphone manufacturers in the world today, but there are those that are leading in terms of sales, quality, and popularity. Here are the top smartphone manufacturers in the world:

  1. Samsung

Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate that has been around for 7 decades. Samsung is based in a town called Samsung in Seoul. In the first quarter of 2017, Samsung’s market share was at 22.8 percent.

The Samsung smartphone history

You will be surprised to know that Samsung started making smartphones for Sprint before Apple smartphones were available in the market. This company has been making smartphones for over a decade now. It has dabbled with Palm, Windows Phone, the Samsung quasi-smartphone operating system based on Java, and Galaxy phones. Samsung’s place in the smartphone industry was cemented when it released Galaxy S III.

Samsung also sells a wide range of smartphones in various sizes and operating systems. It manufactures phones with operating systems such as Android, Windows Phone, Samsung Ativ Odyssey, and Tizen.

The great achievement of Galaxy began in 2008 when Samsung released two smartphones with full-touch interfaces.

The smartphone ancestors

Samsung SPH-1300

This phone was released in October 2001. This phone had a finger-centric interface.

Samsung SGH-i607 BlackJack

This phone was released in November 2006. This was during the Blackberry mania. This phone was powered by Windows and it was an imitation of the Blackberry.

Samsung Instinct and Samsung Omnia SCH-i910

These phones provide great proof of how smartphone manufacturers were struggling with the touchscreen revolution. They were both released in 2008.

The Samsung-Apple enmity

The anti-Samsung lawsuit was based on the Samsung Galaxy S which was released in 2011. However, this lawsuit did not keep Galaxy S II from becoming a success. It featured round corners and one physical home button.

The Samsung Galaxy family

The success of the Samsung Galaxy phones has a lot to do with diversity, a wide range for all customers, and freedom. This family has high end phones, middle rangers, and low rangers. This means that everyone can get a slice of the Samsung quality slice no matter their income.

The upcoming Samsung phones

Samsung will release Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8 in the second half of 2017.

  1. Apple

Apple is an American multinational company that specializes in technology. It is located in Cupertino, California. The company has been around for 4 decades. Apple’s iPhone 7 made the most sales globally in the first quarter of 2017 and it sold 50.7 million iPhones in the last quarter of 2016.

The impact of the iPhone

Since Steve Jobs launched iPhone in 2007, the smartphone evolution changed. The ownership of smartphones increased, smartphone sales went up, people began spending too much time on their phones, and cellular bills increased. Additionally, the iPhone design created the current trend of smartphones which ditched the physical button for bigger sleeker displays. Apple has sued over this fact, alleging that other companies have copied its design.

Before the iPhone, phones were simply tools to make tools. But after its launch, smartphones are now used for a lot of important daily tasks. In other words, smartphones have taken over the world. They have taken over our lives.

The iPhone history

Steve jobs said that Apple would reinvent the phone, and it did. The iPhone set the rules for smartphones. Here is a walk down memory lane:

iPhone 2007

The first iPhone featured a touchscreen and advanced computer-like abilities. However, it did not have GPS, third-party apps and video recording.

iPhone 2008

The second generation iPhone featured 3G support and GPS. The App store was launched in the same year.

iPhone 2009

This year saw the beginning of the Apple tradition of including an ‘S’ to every iPhone improvement. iPhone 3 featured video recording abilities and an improved camera. The ‘S’ meant speed and signified the upgrades of voice control and internal components.

Each year saw a better sleeker iPhone and every year the sales increased and only went down in 2016.

The upcoming iPhones

Apple will release iPhone 8 in the second half of 2017.

  1. Huawei

Huawei is a multinational Chinese company based in Shenzhen, Guangdong. Huawei has been in business for 3 decades. The company had a market share of 9.8 percent in the first quarter of 2017. Huawei has a large smartphone market in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Scandinavia.

Huawei has worked hard to rise as the third largest smartphone manufacturer, competing with Apple and Samsung. This rapid rise is thanks to the company’s strive to improve the quality of their products.

The history of Huawei smartphones

Huawei began by making cheap smartphones but in 2010, it changed its strategy. It took advantage of the missing advanced technology in China. The company created its first 3G smartphone. 20 million sales were made that year.

Huawei then entered the international market with high end smartphones where it created an even bigger market than its domestic one. Huawei is now competing with Apple and Samsung. Additionally, it has plans on making its own operating system because it depends on Google’s Android.

The current smartphones

Huawei launched P10 and P10 plus earlier in 2017.
