Kicker Joey Slye becomes Virginia Tech’s all-time scorer, now focus…

For Virginia Tech kicker Joey Slye, the chase is over. He entered the Hokies record book on Saturday by kicking 3 field goals
in a 23-10 win over Boston College that move him past Shayne Graham as the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Slye is thankful this chapter has concluded, and now he can concentrate on helping this team win games.

“Honestly, there’s just been a lot of talk about it and for me it’s just something that’s been there,” Slye said to
Roanoke Times writer Andy Bitter, “If I do my job, it was going to come anyway. So I just have been focusing on what I can do to help the
team and kind of those victories will come with everything, but it is nice to get away from talking about it.”

Closing in on the record has brought challenges to Slye. He entered Saturday’s game hitting only 8-for-14 field goals this
season and was uncharacteristically inconsistent from inside 40 yards, where Slye missed 3 from that distance this year after
missing only 4 in his first three years with Virginia Tech.

Slye has been a mainstay in the Hokies lineup since earning the starting job as a true freshman. He was voted with first-team
All-ACC honors last season by the conference coaches and twice was a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is given
to the country’s top kicker each year.

Virginia Tech is on a bye this week before hosting North Carolina on Oct. 21.
