IMF Chief economist Maurice Obstfeld says fund has an optimistic Brexit outlook


Speaking on the sidelines at the IMF and World Bank annual meeting today

Comments from International Monetary Fund Chief economist Maurice Obstfeld 

  • Said he has an ‘optimistic’
    Brexit outlook for tariff-free trade in goods, financial services
    favourable to the UK

He had wider ranging remarks also: 

  • says growth has reached plateau, but is more uneven among countries
  • concerned about higher levels of public debts and lower interest rates leaving less room to deal with downturn
  • continues to recommend that china focus on quality and sustainability of growth, not quantity of growth
  • China should balance actions to support growth with need to maintain financial stability
  • says not worried about Chinese yuan depreciation, not a problem for Chinese government to defend its currency
